Summer RecapThe Book Launch

Summer Recapâ€"The Book Launch For several reasons, it’s been quite a while since my last blog. Between then and now, a fusillade of transformations has taken place. Rather than present a disjointed patchwork of events from here and there, I’ll just take a deep breath and start from the beginning, when summer was peaking and plans were forming. Book Launch In 2012, I started working on a novel. In 2013, it was completed. In 2014, it was published. The journey from the first uncertain scrawl of words to the final product was a weird, imprecise zigzag, but it’s also one I never foresaw. Back then, if you had asked me why I was writing the book, I probably would have looked at you with furrowed brows and a surprised look. Why? Why I’m writing it? Because…because… I want to? No, not quite. I mean, yes, of course I want to write. But that’s not why. I don’t know what the why is. I don’t know why the kidnapping on the news stuck with me the way it did, why it bounced around and persisted in my head, fermenting and ripening until it suddenly felt too much to simply be contained. It just had to be written. I couldn’t say why, but it just had to be, and in the absence of words to give shape to this looming story, it persisted like a large pimple, needing immediate attention. The moment I began typing the words, it was like getting lost, vanishing into a dark cabinet where warm voices murmur and where you feel comfort despite the lack of sight. That’s why I wrote the book, and I don’t think I can articulate it any better than that. What I do know is that I never really intended for it to be published, at least not until the later stages of the novel, a hundred thousand words into the demented lives of Joseph and Ashley. I was writing because, just because, fullstop, and the idea of publishing held the same substance that MIT once dida height to be contemplated and admired, never grasped. But I already spoke about how dreams sometimes spring out of the boxes they reside in. I just want to talk about the process of bringing the published book to life. A book needs readers, right? So the publishing press put together a small planning committee. We upturned every rock, burnt the midnight oil, trying to figure out how to promote the book. Ultimately, we decided on a pre-sales book launch that would bring together students, parents, friends, government personnel and the media into a whirlwind of publicity. The launch took place on the nineteenth of June. Teachers from my high school showed up with students. My friends trickled in, all of them looking so much more different than I remembered. Government ministries were represented, of education, of power. So were companies I suppose were curious about the book, and about whatever waves it was stirring. I think a lot of the unexpectedly profound publicity had a lot to do with my age juxtaposed against the sheer size of the book. Prior to the launch, I went around a lot, meeting people, introducing the book, giving summaries and free copies and autographs. Whenever they saw it for the first time, there was a certain way their eyes popped open. Sure, they knew I’d written something, but it was so…big. I found this near-universal surprise a little amusing. They’d ask how I’d done it, and it would seem a bit weird because I had had a year and I wrote all the time, and the daily hours of investment, which I guess accumulated pretty fast, seemed sort of normal at the time. I write with every chance I get. And like anything, it just piles up. Anyway, for the launch, I was dressed in a spiffy red suit, which made me feel claustrophobic. I was also nervous as hell. I remember diving into a bathroom moments before everything began, just breathing in and out, staring at myself in the mirror. The cynical, consistently loud, consistently self-aware and self-criticizing part of me I think comes with writing was actually quiet that day. All of me was quiet, inside and out. I knew it was a huge day, or was supposed to be a huge day, but staring at myself, with my bent glasses hinged on my crooked nose, I couldn’t quite process anything, except the feeling of bigness, of being overwhelmed without being sure why. Then the event started. Guests of honors were rattled out, most notably a state governor who had sent in a representative. There were a few remarks about the book, followed by an in-depth review by a professor. And I do mean in-depth. His review was long and detailed and sweeping, and brought to light his opinions on the merits and flaws of the book. For instance, to his taste, my symbolism was overdone and a lot of phrases were notably unduly complicated or odd-sounding. But overall, his review was positive. He praised the characters, the realistic nature of their depressing situations. It was actually the first official review of the book, and the first professional review I’d heard and I think I was most aware of the fact that all these people were here listening to him talk about the book, while I sat at the other side of the room, facing the crowd, still sort of shell-shocked. After the review was over, I read a few pages from the book, somehow without hyperventilating into a nervous mess on the floor. Then the sales began. There were lots of pictures and lots of poses and lots of interviews and lots of clicking cameras. People smiling and talking and mingling and pulling me in all directions when the launch ended. But to my ears, the inner ears that no one could probe, there was only the loudness of my heartbeat, the awe. I dont know why. I do know that the day of the launch was one of the happiest days of my life. During the launch, most people bought the book at its normal price, but a lot of others, mostly government personnel, wanted to show support for the book and the publishers, and thus voluntarily bought copies at significantly higher amounts. As a result, the novel broke even on the first day of sale, and since then has made over forty thousand dollars. Aftermath A lot followed the day of the launch. I still went everywhere I could, trying to promote it. My high school gave me a booth during its Class of 2014 Graduation Ceremony where I sat for several hours and talked about the book to parents. And while sales did happen all the time, they also didn’t happen a lot of times. Since I was one of several people involved in direct sales, there were times I would walk up to people to talk about the book and they would quickly shut me downâ€"the natural fear of all salespeople, I think, wherein we all agree that they are soul-sucking time-wasting leeches. I remember in particular, approaching a bored-looking woman during the graduation ceremony, asking her if I could interest her in the book. She said “sure” and I went into a detailed explanation as to what it was all about. She nodded and smiled and after I was done, she asked, “Are you done?” “Yes,” I said. “Okay,” she replied. “No.” Then she got up and left. There were other variantsâ€"“I’m not interested” and “Please I’m busy” and the noncommittal “Okay, I’ll come by later and check it out, I promise.” But the ones that did sell involved the same first stepâ€"having the courage to go up and talk to people. They didn’t come over to the booths by themselvesâ€"at least many of them didn’t. A lot of times, I had to take a breath in and walk up to them and say, “Hey, can I talk to you about this book?” I’m not very good with public speaking. Heck, people have a consistently hard time trying to figure out what I’m saying. I was too aware of this and was always nervous, but somehow always managed to slip into that neutral, controlled, traveling salesman voice whenever I had to. It was a powerful learning experience, and for each sale and each rejection that came from me reaching out to someone, I was at least proud of my effort. ** The book was featured in three national newspapers, a literary magazine and a national TV channelâ€"African Independent Television. For the TV bit, I naturally had to go up to be interviewed. On live TV. And I didn’t realize it was live until moments before the program started. I probably would have if I hadn’t been so late. So the extensive network of offices, satellites and equipment that comprise AIT are situated on top of a hill, but this hill is shrouded by extensive high-rises of jutting rocks and sprawling vegetation, and thus making it out from the ground is impossible. There was no internet to even permit me to fool around on a GPS, and even though my parents (who were driving me there) had the address, we had no real clue where the place was. We resorted to the “Nigerian GPS” system, which means stopping continuously to ask passersby for direction. Which was fun because one would say, “Head a few miles north this way” and we would head north and ask someone else who would say, “Nope, wrong direction, head several miles south the opposite way!” But we did end up finding the station in the nick of time. I was supposed to be featured on a live Sunday afternoon show called “Frontline”, and we were dangerously close to running late. Thus, there was no time to prepare. The show’s host, Martin Ilo, hurried me into the newsroom. I was more or less shoved into a seat. A swarm of people surrounded me, powdering my face and my nose with all sorts of weird things that, in my disoriented state of mind, could have been anything from lotion to rat poison. Then bright halogen lights washed my face and my host’s in strange glows, and a million cameras rose like vanishing angels and Martin told me to be calm and collected and just think of him as a casual friend and then the show began. I’m still not sure how that went, but it was definitely fun. So yeah, the book did make more waves than my mind had ever imagined (or intended) it would, but I think the smallest wave it made, at least from a grand cosmic world view or just some objective point of view, was the biggest one for me. But I’ll get to that in just a bit. In Closing, A Few Things From the moment I started writing the book and up to its current evolving state today, I learnt a lot. I don’t want to spend too much time talking about lessons, because they were mostly for me anyway, and they felt like the sort of lessons that imprinted themselves on you by virtue of experience, as opposed to some grand lecturing, but I do wanna say a few things. First, people make dreams happen. Not just a person, people. And there are so many of them I’m grateful for, the wheels of the cog without whom the book would have never spun and taken flight. My parents and friends, the publishers and the salespeople, the government officials that helped out and were willing to let me engage them. So just think about that. That one idea you’ve spent harboring will not be driven to fruition in a dingy basement or a lonely lab. And that’s one of the most comforting, most relieving facts I know. Second, we’re all capable of courage, but for the things we care most about, it really shows itself when it counts the most. Talking to people, being in the center of things, making public statements, these are the sort of things I can happily do when writing, because the words have a certain drum with which they flow to my head, and it’s rhythmic enough for me that I don’t care so much about how others perceive it. Speaking is almost the direct opposite, and having to do so much of it in such little time was far beyond my comfort zone. But that’s where our most strong-legged dreams will want to take us, beyond our comfort zones. We shouldn’t be afraid to follow them as they lead us. And finally, make small waves. Whenever you can. I talked about the physically small wave that actually ended up meaning so much to meâ€"and that wave was my little brother, Johnpaul, who I think represented the biggest aftermath of the book launch for me. Johnpaul had been at the book launch. The day afterward, I found him on the house desktop, which meant the universe was still in order because he was always there playing some really old version of FIFA. But this time, he wasn’t playing a game. As I came upon what he was doing, I was pretty surprised. “Johnpaul?” I said. “What are you doing?” He looked up from the Microsoft Office document, where at the corner, I saw he had written seven hundred words thus far. “I want to be like you,” he said. “I want to write my own book too.” For me, that small wave was the biggest one. **

Cultural Diversity A Source of Competitive Advantage

Cultural diversity as a source of competitive advantage Few companies today can deny the need to foster a culturally diverse workforce. From a purely legal standpoint, diversity and nondiscrimination policies are mandated in most of the legal systems of the major industrialized powers. Publicity about discriminatory behavior can also be extremely damaging for an organization, costing the company both in legal fees and lost sales. However, simply viewing diversity as the right thing to do or the legally correct thing to do may not be enough. Companies must give serious consideration as to how diverse hiring practices can also generate a competitive advantage. Diversity can expand the range of available ideas on which the company can capitalize; facilitate the retention of a wider range of top talent; open up new marketing opportunities; and better prepare the company to meet the needs of a diverse global marketplace (Espinoza 2007:43). On a very basic level, people like to buy from people that look like them, have similar backgrounds, speak the same language and have similar interests (Espinoza 2007:43). For many decades, companies asked themselves what do women want and what does this specific demographic group want? The Shirkov Parish free essay sample

. To the north West of Tver among The Valdai Hills, which are covered with confferous and deciduous wood, there is a long concatenation offour lakes, formed from the river Volga: the Sterzh, Vseloog, Peno and Volgo. These are the upper ranges of the great Russian River Volga. Until the center of the 19th centory the river was non abundant in H2O, but in 1843 a dike was built below the present Volgo lake which caused this formation of lakes ( The dike was recon structed in 1943 ) . The Upper Volga is interesting non merely for its picturesque suroundings but besides for its range history. In early prehistoric times chiefly during the Stone Age and the Broze Age this country was already populated by huntsmans and fishermen. William Golding Stated in a Radio Broadcast free essay sample

William Golding stated in a radio broadcast that â€Å"the boys are suffering from the terrible disease of being human†. Explain how this pessimistic assessment of human nature is constructed in â€Å"Lord of the Flies†. What indicators are there of â€Å"a light at the end of the tunnel†, that is, of any signs of hope for the future of humanity? The novel ‘Lord of the flies’ is a text by William Golding which deals heavily with underlying themes of an evil that lives in the heart of all of mankind. The novel does indeed portray the idea of the boys suffering from ‘the terrible disease of being human’, and this is suggested at various instances throughout the text. There are also references to a light at the end of the tunnel through the appearance of the character Simon. Throughout the novel, there is a constant contrast of ‘good versus evil’ on a primitive political level between Jack and Ralph, while toying with the themes of the island boys becoming savages due to fear, and evil that lurks within humanity. We will write a custom essay sample on William Golding Stated in a Radio Broadcast or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Although there are hints at goodness within mankind, this is also silenced during the second third of the novel due to the arising savagery of the boys. Examples of such behaviour (both good and bad) include the political struggle for power between Jack and Ralph; the face paint of the savages as a representation of evil; the presence of the Conch as a representation of civil authority; the appearance of the character Simon and his messiah-like presence amongst the boys; and the collapse of all society leaving Ralph as the final civil member. During the novel, there is a maintained contrast between the civil, political governing of Ralph, against the savage, tribal ways of Jack’s rule. This eternal dance of opposites on the island serves to show that the evil within all of mankind can stir and grow, and savagery can overcome civilisation in the right circumstances. Even at one point, Ralph almost descends into savagery as he felt the desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering. (p. 126). This occurs during the play-hunting passages, a scene in where the boys re-enacted the killing of the first pig in an almost tribal ritual, where the primal urges overcome even the civilized chief. This shows that even the main representation of civilization was perhaps falling and faltering, if only for momentarily, this is still an example of a sophisticated human giving into primal temptation. A key example of a savage metaphor includes the boys’ face paint. The painted faces of the savages do not exist early on in the book, as not many children have the desire to hunt, a possible reason for this is that the memories of civilization and rules are not yet forgotten, and to kill innocent animals was as yet unheard of: Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. (p. 56). Jack was hesitant in killing his first pig, perhaps the downfall of the society begins here, as the hunter is enraged at himself, his naked face symbolizing the innocence of the children. This is changed by the presence of face paint, which provides the boys a barrier to hide behind, a mask to hide, yet one which reflects the true nature of man. I painted my faceI stole up. Now you eatall of youand I William Golding, p. 67 This is a demonstration in the sheer pride of Jacks first kill. His confidence and his tribal, hunting nature is accentuated by his mask of paint. His inner primal form escapes for the first time escapes here for the first time in the text. In contrast to this emergence of animal-like behavior are metaphors for authority and civilization as a whole, such as the Conch. The conch represents civilization and stability, highlighted by it’s impressive shape and pure white glow (white obviously representing cleanliness and purity). Early on, the conch holds authority, and is used to maintain control over the tribe of boys, as the story progresses however; the conch becomes less and less valuable. As the boys begin to disrespect rules and authority and disregard them, the conch deteriorates, if only to be kept alive by the human representation of rationality, Piggy. The fall of civilization is climaxed with the death of piggy, and simultaneously, the conch: The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. William Golding p. 200 As the conch shatters into pieces, so does the island boys chance for civilization to restore, the last remaining flicker of society gone in an instant when faced against the painted faced tribal boys. It can also be argued that the downfall of the boys was reinforced by the death of Simon. As the true nature of humankind comes to light here, Golding shows that the existence of purity will ultimately be silenced by the evil within man. As evil nature is a key theme in this book, so is the existence of goodness and purity which is personified through the character Simon. Simon can be considered a Christ like figure throughout the novel. He often thinks to himself on his own in the forest and experiences hallucinations and faintness, much as biblical prophets did. As he was the only one who understood what was going on truly in the island, suggested when he says Maybe there is a beast. maybe its only us. (p. 80). It can be suggested that even though he was killed before his message was spread of the beast; his mere existence proves there is still hope for mankind according to Golding, however small this glint of hope may be. Somewhat similar to Christ, who was (according to Christian belief) free of original sin, and died for mankind before he could spread his message. The merciless death of Simon and Piggy show the extent of mankind’s evils, but one civil member of society was left to tell the tale for a reason. Golding’s purpose for this was to allow the boys themselves to realize their evil, by keeping Ralph alive, he was able to reflect on the deaths of Piggy and Simon. In doing this, he was able to truly appreciate the ‘darkness of man’s heart’ for what it was. This climax provides a gritty, emotional realization for the focal character and in turn, the reader. Through Ralph remains as the only civil member of the society left by the end of the novel, he can still be considered an ‘average boy’, though he remained civil and dignified throughout the novel, he occasionally lapsed into temptation unlike Piggy and Simon. Because there are still occasional hints of him regressing in his primal form, he occasionally forgets the purpose of his fire. â€Å"There was something good about a fire. Something overwhelmingly good† William Golding p. 200 The reader is shown that even the nominated, democratic leader is succumbing to the terrible disease of being human. The disease that given the right circumstances, the right timing, man with regress back into it’s original, evil, diseased state of cruel humanity. As this is discovered finally by Ralph at the end of the novel, a powerful passage involves him breaking down in pain and realization of humanity’s evil. Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of mans heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy. William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Chapter 12 As Ralph realizes the true nature of mankind at the climax of the text, he is emotionally and mentally distraught at the thought that all of humankind is cursed with the terrible disease of being human. This shows that even the strongest of men can be reduced to tears at the thought of humankind and its ways. To conclude, the pessimistic nature of man is constructed throughout the novel in the form of various acts and metaphors representing the different social statuses of the boys on the island, such as face paint representing savagery, and naked faces and the conch represent civilization. However, there is also some ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ depicted through the uncorrupted characters of Simon and Piggy. Though ultimately killed, their existence shows that perhaps there is still hope for mankind, despite its humane sickness. The ever changing dance of opposites between good and evil is finally resolved on the island, but as Ralph realizes, the darkness of man’s heart will never be changed.

Free Essays on My September 11th

On September ninth I celebrated my twenty-third birthday, which wasn’t much as I had just moved into my new one bedroom apartment the week before. My new place was in D.U.M.B.O., Brooklyn, a very unique and eclectic neighborhood located at the base of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, right down underneath the Manhattan bridge overpass (hence the acronym). One of the reasons that I loved this neighborhood so much (besides my fabulous new loft pad in an undercover community of amazing artists), was it’s prime location on the water front of the East River. A quick two block walk along the quiet cobble stone streets, then squeezing through the hole in the tattered fence that guards the empty lot over grown with weeds, and I was in heaven: my very own private spot on the water, where the most amazing pink, orange and blue sunsets occurred over the Brooklyn Bridge, the borough of Manhattan, and the Twin Towers. Little did I know that my semi-private sanctuary was about to become a constant visual reminder of the most dreadful day of my life. The events of September eleventh were about to unfold in front of everyone’s eyes, changing life as we knew it. I woke up that morning thinking it would be like any other. It was a sunny and beautiful yet unusually warm September day. I was running late, as usual, straining to hear the morning news in the living room while in the bath room preparing myself for the day. Not only was this one of the first mornings spent in my new apartment, but this Tuesday in particular marked the first week I had spent on my new job managing the business affairs for a photo stylist. As I had spent the past few years in dot com land, I was quite enthusiastic about my new endeavor. Tuesday, the eleventh, we were scheduled to be shooting a print ad for David’s Bridal. CONTRACT LAW ASSIGNMENT 4 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

CONTRACT LAW ASSIGNMENT 4 - Essay Example Contract terms of employment could change due to changed economic circumstances, or to bring about improvements in working conditions3. Materially changed circumstances are always admissible especially for the benefit of children. Contracts could be changed if there is an absolute change in the law4that occurs during the course of contract. If the other party becomes seriously ill, permanently incapacitated, called for military services or dies5 contract could be frustrated. If the contract depends on a certain state of affairs which alters, contracts could be frustrated6. Commercial purpose of contract could be frustrated if unalterable circumstances take place7. It also can happen if the main object of contract becomes void subsequently8 and the circumstances should be acceptable to Court. Fred and George have won the contract together for the installation of water system and this makes both of them bound by contract9. Still there is a contract between George and Fred and George defaults his side of it by delaying the work. Fred tries to accomplish his side of contract, but fails to do so, after doing three quarters of the work because he had to honour another contract. Fred has to be paid by George as he has done a lot of his share of work and it is George's delay that made Fred leave the job for honouring another contract. Still George and Fred are liable for completing the water system to the third party and here their liability is equal. Fred can claim payment from George for the work he has done. If he could prove that it was George's delay that caused him trouble, he might be able to get damages from George via Court. Still he will be liable to honour the first contract of completing water systems and will be forced to do so10. If water systems claim damages fro m the two of them for delay, Fred too may have to pay the damages, though he could have a lesser share of it, if he succeeds in proving that George defaulted his contract with him as well as with water systems. Not paying Fred would go against George and will give more strength to Fred's argument and Court might take a lighter view of his abandoning one quarter of the work under changed circumstances of contract which clearly redeems Fred for non-payment and delay by George. This could be taken as self-induced frustration. Fred also will be paid for the contract completed as it could be considered as 'substantially completed' and it entitles for a payment of services and goods, though it will be compared with the work NOT done. QUESTION THREE: Presuming that the illness of the parties could be traceable to the sandwiches and fault lies with Harry, his defence will be weak. He might be able to prove that the meat was contaminated not through his fault, but was supplied to him in contaminated state and he was unaware of it, whereby the fault will be divided between the meat supplier and Harry. If he could not prove that and if the contamination is due to his fault (meat supplier might prove that other meat of the same category is not faulty), he will be liable for the sickness caused to the parties. Ian's garden getting neglected might not cause much harm to Harry. John can

Concert Report on Smokey Robinson Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Concert Report on Smokey Robinson - Essay Example The NYCB Theater is among the top music theaters in New York City. Being among the most famous venues for music festivals in the country, the NYCB Theater was in a good position to host the Smokey Robinson’s concert in New York. Firstly, the theater is more spacious than most music theaters in the US. This indicates that the NYCB Theater was the only theater capable of hosting an event of such a caliber as the Smokey concert. Smokey Robinson has many fans from within New York City and other major cities across the country. The attendance at the theater clearly demonstrated how Smokey Robinson is popular among his followers. The attendance of his show proved that R&B music is still popular among American despite previous claims that R&B song are losing ground to other music genres such as hip hop. This is due to the number R&B stars that are currently switching to hip-hop and rock music. Major R&B singers such as Whitney Houston have redone some of their songs in hip-hop in ord er to incorporate the preferences of the American society. The concert proved to me that R&B music still has many fans within the country. Musial theater performance is not like any other performance. I had previously come across this fact through my studies on theater and performances. Unlike other theater performances, musical theater performance can be described as a two-way performance. This indicates that a successful performance will depend on the effort of the performer and the audience. A musician performing on stage requires the response of the audience in order to achieve successful delivery. This response will include appraisal by the crowd and positive response of the audience. A performer will also prefer an audience that joins him or her in the performance. This will involve situations where a musician allows the audience to sing certain segment of his song or dance rhythmically to his song. I had learnt the theoretical concept on the importance of a responsive audienc e but I had not had a real life experience of such scenarios. The concert therefore presented me with an opportunity to verify the importance of a responsive audience to a performance. During the performance, I also had the opportunity to verify the effect that the audience have on the artist. Robinson opened the concert with his hit song Miracle that got the whole auditorium into shouts and screams of joy. Everyone who present in the theatre wanted to be next to Robinson as possible. If it was also possible, some people could have joined the superstar on the stage. However, the theater was so fully packed with fans and therefore, joining him on the stage was not possible. During this time, I discovered that Smokey is not only a songwriter and a performer, but also has a good background on crowd psychology. Similarly, he was well versed with the fact that the success of performer depends on the attitude of the audience. Smokey therefore utilized the first minutes of his performance trying to get the audience into the same tempo as his ensemble. The performer also utilized these crucial moments trying to make the audience anxious about his performance and the expectations of the show. His hit song â€Å"Miracle† compensated his expectations for the performance. During the performance, I realized that this song has many fans and, it is among his most famous song from his last album. After singing the first few lines of the song

Louis xiv :: European Europe History

Louis xiv Louis XIV gained power for himself and his national government through absolutism. Absolutism is unlimited power in government and society. In government to be an absolutist the king would have unlimited power in all forms of the government such as the legislative, judicial, executive, and revenues. As an absolutist Louis would have unlimited power in the society by controlling the economy and church. To control the church he would follow the divine right of kings, which goes along with absolutism, and be a figure to the people that is spoken through by God. That way the people would follow the king, believe what he says, and consider him sacred. Thomas Hobbes worded best what would happen if absolutism did not come into effect in his book 'The Leviation'. Louis perfected the machinery of government of which he imposed his will on France and made himself the subject of his subjects' loyalty. To accomplish this he organized civil services, reorganized the military, improved the econom y, and greatly expressed his power. Louis' first step was to expand the civil services. He staffed his government with men who would obey him w/out question. Instead of filling the position with nobles, he appointed advisors drawn largely from the middle class. This way the people only had claim to what the king gave them and could take away. He kept the reins of he government firmly in his own hands and didn't let the nobles get a chance to overpower him. He made it so that all the decisions made were his decisions. Louis proposed to expand the activities of the central government. He in practice and theory became the master of his kingdom. The number of state servants grew enormously. The amount of state servants that used to be at 600, in the beginning of his reign, grew to 10,000. A new kind of royal officials appeared. They were called intendants; they gathered information for the king and supervised the enforcement of his decisions. They brought a new kind of order to France. One of the most significant features of the new order was the reorganization of the French army. Michel le Tellier and his son the Marquis de Louvois were responsible for the reorganization. The two men created not only a fighting force bigger than that of any other country in Europe, but also a military establishment with a pyramidal structure of responsibility and authority.

Why slavery was abolished

There are many things that have created slavery but also many things to abolish it. Historians have identified a number of factors that contributed to the abolition of slavery, but here are the most important ones that I will talk about in this essay; middle class whites, black slaves, working class whites and economics. The white middle class people played a huge part in the abolition of slavery. William Wilberforce was a highly respected MP; he played a huge part in the abolition by forming a group opposing slavery. He campaigned by making lots of speeches and studied the terrible conditions on board the slave ships. Granville Sharp was a surgeon in east London, when he met a slave named Jonathan Strong. Strong had been whipped and badly beaten by his master David Lisle. Sharp took him to hospital where he recovered. Strong was working as a healthy messenger boy when Lisle had him recaptured. When Sharp heard of this, he took Lisle to court to regain Strong his freedom. Sharp won the case and it got him a lot of good publicity, which Sharp later used, for his further campaigns. William Pitt was a prime minister at the time and he also heavily opposed slavery, he got parliament to make the law that to improve conditions on the plantations in the West Indies but unfortunately this had very little effect. Josiah Wedgwood was the younger son of Thomas Wedgwood. Josiah created a plaque to try and change people's minds about slavery, the plaque was of a black slave in chains and around the sides read: ‘Am I not a man or a brother?' This saying helped abolish slavery because it made people realise that slaves are human beings and are men or brothers not cargo. He also joined with Thomas Clarkson and Granville Sharp to form the society for the abolition of the slave trade. It was not just the middle class whites but also the working class whites too, they signed thousands of petitions to abolish slavery and in 1814 1.5 million people signed a petition. Lots of speeches were made after work outside on the streets. Usually there would be huge groups of workers all gathered round to hear debates. After the law in 1807 abolished the slave trade, middle class whites still kept on protesting until slavery was abolished altogether. Slavery was also abolished because the money that was being made from it was decreasing rapidly. Adam Smith who was an economist said that slaves who are forced to work for free would put very little effort into there work but if they had something to be motivated by like a pay check they would want to work harder for more money, this results in better business because more work is being done. As time went by places apart from the West Indies, started producing sugar. Places like Cuba and Jamaica made their sugar very cheap and did not have slaves to do the work. This forced a lot of the British sugar plantations in the West Indies to close down, which brought a reduction in the demand for slaves. The black slaves themselves also took upon there human rights and helped to abolish slavery. Lots of black slaves who worked in Britain started to demand wages from their owners and to be treated like normal servants. Some slave owners would have taken this badly and the slave would have been beaten. This would have only caused the slave owner more trouble by being taken to court by his slave so the slave could fight for his/her freedom. The slave would do this by getting help from someone like Granville Sharp. In every case the judges made a different decision each time because the judges did not want to seem biased. The black slaves who worked in the sugar plantations in the West Indies, did not have the chance to go to court so they rebelled! One of the biggest rebellions was at the British plantation of St Domingue; the slaves killed their owners and set fire to all the sugar canes. British troops were sent out to stop them but the slaves defeated them. This made the British see how badly the slaves wanted freedom. Olaudah Equiano probably had the biggest impact on the abolition of slavery. He was a slave who brought his own freedom and wrote his autobiography on his past experiences as a slave. This turned many people against slavery and Olaudah soon found he working with the likes of Wilberforce. He also helped slaves gain their freedom and brought cases like the zong to the public's attention. Some people like Elizabeth Heyrick only played a small part in the abolition but they still got something done. In 1824 Elizabeth Heyrick published her pamphlet immediate not gradual abolition. In her pamphlet Heyrick argued in favour of the immediate freedom of the slaves in the British colonies. This was different from the official policy of the anti slavery society that believed in gradual abolition. The leadership of the organisation attempted to stop information about the existence of this pamphlet and William Wilberforce gave out instructions for leaders of the movement not to speak at women's anti-slavery societies. At the conference in May 1830, the anti slavery society agreed to drop the words â€Å"gradual abolition† from its title. It also agreed to support Elizabeth heyrick's plan for a new campaign to bring about immediate abolition. The following year the anti slavery society presented a petition to the House of Commons calling for the â€Å"immediate freeing of newborn children of slaves†. As you can see slavery was abolished for so many reasons but what I think the most significant are a combination of the middle class whites and Olaudah Equiano. These were what I think the most important factors where because firstly the middle class whites like Wilberforce where very highly respected people and were the sort not to be ignored at parliament. I think especially Wilberforce because him being an MP meant that parliament would listen to what he had to say which they would not do with a working class white for example. Olaudah Equiano played a big part because he spoke about slavery from a personal experience and when something as bad as the horrific tales of slavery has come straight from a person who has experienced it has a greater effect rather then if it came from a MP who had not experienced it.

Police Brutality In our current climate due to the polices actions, they have earned a bad reputations. Some of their actions are beating up innocent civilians, not following laws, and how times have changed. Now people are scared of the police because of what they have done and now civilians do not feel safe whenever they are around them. We should not be afraid of police, as we should now. Everyone now a days are now afraid of the police because of recent stories of them brutally beating innocent and unarmed civilians. On the website, there is also a video that shows the police brutally beating up an innocent civilians. The policemen are suppose to help protect and serve the state instead of beating up civilians that have done nothing to deserve that. The innocent civilian was on the phone outside, when a cop pulled him to the side and slammed his head to the wall. When his head was slammed against the wall, three other cops were there and they also helped beat up the civilian. This is one of the actions that the police have done in order to get the bad reputation. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Police And Its Reputation" essay for you Create order The police are setting a bad example. The law says to do specific things in a specific way, and what to do and what not to do. The police thinks because they are part of the law, they believe that they can not follow laws, like for example, you can not have an electronic out while your driving, yet they have a laptop opened, or their phones out. The police are suppose to set a good example so everyone can follow the laws. Laws are made for a reason and that is a good reason why everyone should follow them. Another way of the police breaking laws, is having possession of drugs. They believe that they can get away with having their own possession of drugs because they are cops, therefore they are breaking the laws. Another reason is using their lights just to get rid of traffic. They use their lights so they do not have to wait for the light to turn green, they simply turn on their lights, so everyone can move out the way so they can pass. Times have changed from how it was back then and now. Police would spend hours talking a shooter or a gang member to step down and to quit doing what their doing. But now the police thinks that the only option they have is to just start pulling triggers. Now that they believe that every time they are in danger, they believe that they should start killing people without any consequences. Some of the other changes that happened are when there are shootings, police used to run away from it, but now they run towards action so they can take control of what is happening. The police should be able to not leave the last result to ending a life when they can change that person to do better. Cops should start going back to their own ways to start talking to the person doing crime, rather than killing them. Often times the cops mostly take away black lives. Some policemen are good cops unlike others. I believe that not all cops are the same, some cops can be nice or mean depending on their mood. Cops are a way of letting people know that they are there to help, and they should know that they will be safe. Cops are a way of protecting life and making sure that in every way possible, that everyone is safe. People now believe that all cops are the same because of other cops actions, people are now afraid of cops because of what they might do. In conclusion, cops do not follow laws, they brutally beats civilians, and over the times when times have changed, cops changed. Police brutality is a very bad thing because the police are supposed to protect and serve instead of brutally beat innocent civilians.

How Email Can Ruin Your Job Search 2019

Some people say email may be dead, but it is very much alive – especially for the job hunter. Email can be your best friend or worst enemy depending on how you use it. Here are 10 common ways that abusing email can ruin your chance at getting a job. Lets take a look: 1. Using a shared email account You and your spouse might be very close, but dont use your email to share that with the world. Employers dont like to email job information to spouses. You can still use your [emailprotected] address, but set up an individual account for professional job hunting purposes. 2. Tacky email signatures Many people like to use their email signature to express themselves. Make sure your email does not include political or religious sayings. Also, the long winded inspirational sayings are very unprofessional as well. It is not professional and will turn off prospective employers. And heres a hint – your friends probably dont like it either! .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8 { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8:active, .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8 { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8 .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8 .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management Teaching People Skills for Effective Management3. Weird fonts The weird font you downloaded for your email may look cool on your computer, but chances are your recipients do not have it so the font defaults to something else. That means it could easily be over or undersized. Also, dont use fonts like comic sans either. That font is unprofessional and makes you look like a little kid. Stick to plain old Arial or Times New Roman. 4. Stationary Email stationary = tacky. Writing an email is not the same as writing a letter. Dont use stationary. 5. Firewalls, forms and anti-spam blockers Everyone hates spam email, but do not make an employer fill out an anti-spam form to send you an email. Chances are they wont do it. 6. Check your spam folder Many times email software will filter out legitimate email messages from potential employers because it does not recognize their address. Make sure to check your spam messages daily. .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2 { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2:active, .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2 { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2 .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2 .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ A Convenient Education In Criminal Justice7. Sending a resume and cover letter to multiple addresses You dont want to make it look like youre sending out your resume and cover letter to a bunch of organizations at once. You want to make sure you only send it to one employer at a time because it makes it look like youre performing a targeted job search. 8. Unprofessional email address You should know this by now, but never use an unprofessional email address. Sexy Sara or Gangstaboi112 may have been cool in college, but now its time for you and your email address to grow up! 9. Poor formatting No need to format your email like a letter that includes your address and the employers address. Doing so makes you look like an email newbie. 10. Using work address This is common, but make sure if youre going to use work time to apply for jobs use another email address. Employers will assume youre going to be doing the same thing to them and not hire you. Its also very unethical to use your current employers time and resources to apply for jobs. .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d:active, .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ New Jersey Colleges and Universities Pursuing Online and Campus Based Education in New JerseyRelated ArticlesIncrease your income with an Online Psychology DegreeWhat Are Free Accounting Software ProgramsBachelor Degree in Business AdministrationGraduate StudiesBusiness Administration Jobs Work as an Administrative Assistant with an Associate Degree in BusinessReasons Why You Shoul Become a Teacher

The Struggle with the Glass Ceiling Essay - 1167 Words

Are all men and women really created equal? Most people would say yes, but if that is the case, why are women prejudiced in the workplace and society? Surprisingly, even in our time period, women struggle to advance to high-skill level positions. Men dominate the vast majority of these positions. Men also, in general, lead their households by making the most income for their families and make the most financial decisions. It is clear that we still live in a patriarchal society. Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart show us that the effects of the gender gap are still evident in current times and women are burdened by the glass ceiling. Women struggle to achieve high level positions. A glass ceiling exists†¦show more content†¦These examples show substantial evidence of the presence of a glass ceiling. In society, prejudice against women limits them in many aspects. In the workplace, â€Å"men are promoted more quickly than women with equivalent qualifications† (Quast). This shows a clear advantage for men in the workplace. Women’s inability to be promoted quickly is an unfortunate barrier that they have to face. In A Doll’s House, in the majority of households, men make the sole household income, even though women can work if they like. Nora is one of the few women who have some work, â€Å"It was splendid to work in that way and earn money. I almost felt as if I was a man† (Ibsen 152). She literally states that she associates working to being a man. Her statement also shows that she is well aware of the fact that men work more than women. She works for her own reasons however, Nora often asks Torvald for money so she can buy herself clothes or other desires. Although she worked herself, unbeknownst to Torvald, she only did in order to pay off her debts which in the end were paid off. In modern times, it isn’t unusual for women to stay home and take care of her kids w hile her husband makes the sole family income. This is because this is the norm for our society, and also because she would make less money if she were the sole provider. Currently, we still live in a patriarchal society. Raymond Carvers Change in Style free essay sample

Raymond Carver is probably best known for his minimalist style. A lot of his stories followed this style of writing. He was dedicated to his short stories and was even quoted as saying he was â€Å"hooked on writing short stories† (Carver, Maturity: Cathedral 2). One of the reasons he wrote short stories and used his minimalist style was because of his life. He had other jobs so he worked a lot of the time and wrote in his spare time which made writing short stories more feasible, not to mention he liked writing them. His minimalist style was impressed upon him by editors of the papers he wrote for who demanded it. Carver’s form of minimalism is a unique one which grew throughout his literary career and no works better show that then â€Å"The Bath† and the later version â€Å"A Small Good Thing. † Both stories have the same central plot and most of the details remain the same, but the way Carver tells each story is dramatically different. His earlier stories use this same minimalist style but we see a change and even growth in his writing as he moves away from minimalism and embraces description. The fundamentals stay the same in both stories, which end up having about the same effect on the reader. Ann, Scotty’s mother, orders a birthday cake from the baker, Scotty is hit by a car and taken to a hospital where a doctor assures the family that Scotty will be fine, when in actuality, it seems that Scotty’s condition is getting worse. Throughout â€Å"A Small Good Thing†, Carver adds a tremendous more amount detail into the story, which separates him from the minimalist style used in â€Å"The Bath. In doing so, Carver gives up the chance for any open ended questions or any space for the reader’s imagination, which could make for a stronger story and more insight into the characters. For example, in â€Å"A Small, Good Thing† the baker is described as being abrupt, but in â€Å"The Bath† he just seemed to come off as rude. Also the actions of Howard, Scotty’s father, are more descriptive and there is more detail given to what he does which turns him into a larger part of the story. And finally, Scotty’s condition in â€Å"A Small, Good Thing† is discussed in greater detail by the Doctor which hints at us earlier on in the story that maybe Scotty isn’t going to be ok. The Bath ends with Ann coming home to take a well deserved break from the hospital when she receives a phone call. When Ann asks if it is about Scotty, the voice on the other line, left specifically unknown to us by Carver, says that it does have to do with Scotty. This open ending statement provides several questions for the reader about what may be wrong with Scotty or who is on the phone. A Small Good Thing† is Carver’s attempt to break away from this label of a minimalist writer. Though he gives more detail the story loses its sense of mystery and requires less of the reader’s imagination. However, in losing its open ended closing, Carver makes up for it by revealing more about the baker and his perspective. In â€Å"The Bath† we can only assume t hat the voice on the other end of the line at the end of the story is the baker. And with this assumption we wonder why the baker seems so mean and persistent with his phone calls. â€Å"A Small Good Thing† changes this perception of the baker. In the end of the story, the baker is confronted by the hurt parents who unleash their anger at Scotty’s death at the baker. The baker accepts all of the parents’ abuse and provides comfort to them in their time of need and fills their empty stomachs with freshly baked bread. The way Carver portrays the baker with more detail into his qualities and his perspective is more acceptable to the common reader. Unlike â€Å"The Bath† when we leave the story on a sad or confused note. Instead, in â€Å"A Small, Good Thing† the bread serves as closure and of healing the parents’ wounds. It’s clear that the revisions by Raymond Carver to â€Å"The Bath† make for a better story, since the holes â€Å"The Bath† left are filled in with the extra detail provided in â€Å"A Small, Good Thing. † We also leave with a more positive feeling due to the closure brought by the baker. Carver even manages to shatter the minimalist title that comes along with much of his work. However, â€Å"A Small Good Thing† acts as a trade off with â€Å"The Bath. † Because even though we get a stronger story and better character insight and detail, we lose the thoughts and imagination that the holes in â€Å"The Bath† leave us with at the end of the story.
